IMA was founded in 1958 as the the world’s largest organization promoting mineralogy, one of the oldest branches of science. 36 national mineralogical societies or groups are members of IMA. The Association supports the activities of several Commissions and Working Groups at the cutting edge of mineralogy and facilitates interactions among mineralogists by sponsoring and organizing meetings.

IMA Statement
According to our constitution, an important objective of IMA is the promotion of contact and interaction among mineralogists of all nations. The current dramatic events in Ukraina affect IMA, in that both Ukraine and Russia are two of our member countries. Thus, we cannot ignore the present situation and we call for a dialogue without weapons and or peace. Any military conflict is a humanitarian catastrophe serving against progress and international scientific cooperation.

Mineral of the Year 2023 – Batoniite

For 2023 the “Mineral of the Year” award has been assigned to batoniite. The mineral was discovered in a sample collected at the Cetine di Cotorniano mine, Siena Province, Tuscany, Italy, and was fully characterized by a research team lead by Daniela Mauro from the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Pisa, Italy.

Prof. Tetsuo IRIFUNE of Geodynamics Research Center, Ehime University, (Japan) is our 2023 IMA Medalist. Congratulations! He is a pioneer in the development of new methods for the generation of ultrahigh pressures and temperatures in large volumes press and has reached the highest level of scientific excellence and eminence within the international mineral physics community by setting new standards in the performance of high-pressure experiments with applications to both deep Earth processes, and to materials science.
